A great Valentine's Day for singles

PEAK TO PEAK - The great thing about Valentine’s Day is that, much like any other holiday, you don’t have to celebrate it unless you want to. However, if you’re happily single and are looking for ways to celebrate love, here are a few ideas to get you started.

First, remind yourself that Valentine’s is about love—all love. And love is shared not only between couples, but equally with friends and family. Also remember that being single means you have something those who are coupled don't have: freedom and independence to do whatever you’d like.

According to the United States Census Bureau, nearly 50% of the population is single. Almost certainly you know a few. So, gather them and throw a game-playing party. That’s right—nothing says a great night of laughter and fun like playing board games and connecting with friends.

One popular activity uniquely appropriate for singles is a day at the spa. Can’t afford an entire day? No worries. Many spas offer one-hour massages or 30-minute foot soaks. There is surely something you can enjoy.

There’s nothing wrong with distracting yourself from Valentine’s Day. Starting a new project can be fun. Your friends can help or you can make this a new tradition just for yourself. You can start painting or learning a new language. The possibilities are endless.

Many women throw a Galentine’s Day gathering. They dress up and go out to lunch or dinner with their gal pals. Sometimes, Galentine means they dress in the same pajamas and stay inside watching movies and enjoying a home mani-pedi.

Perhaps the gentlemen can have their own “Balentine’s” Day gathering.

Another popular idea for singles celebrating Valentine’s Day is to go on a road trip, even if only for the day. Colorado is an incredible place with so much to discover. Why not get up early and spend the day exploring the town or attraction you’ve wanted to see? This could be the day you revamp your bucket list.

Everyone needs to eat. Invite your friends and cook together—something fun and exotic like Himalayan or Icelandic food. If this sounds like too much work and you prefer to take it easy, spoil yourself and order food from your favorite local establishment.

If you want to spoil yourself in a different way, you can always buy something for yourself, like a new book or a new outfit. How about a gym membership or a pass to a yoga studio? Few things can boost your confidence the way physical fitness can.

If you’re single and have children, consider making it a night filled with Valentine’s Day arts and crafts. You don’t need to purchase supplies, either. Brown paper bags, crayons, markers, and glue can go a long way.

Would you rather be alone? How about bingeing on a show or series you’ve wanted to watch? Did you say you’ve seen everything? Do some homework and find a series or show you haven't seen. Maybe step outside your normal box—telenovelas, anyone? Don’t forget the popcorn.

Whether you’re celebrating alone or with a few of your single friends, there’s no reason you shouldn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. Get creative and show yourself some love!
