BRAINARD LAKE — According to the US Forest Service, “Brainard Lake Road will close two weeks earlier, on the evening of the first of October this year, as Forest Service staff prepare for maintenance and repair projects.”
Usually the road stays open for non-motorized use in the fall and winter. This year it will be closed to all from October 2 - 16 to allow for surveys and prepare for work on the road in the next year.
The US Forest Service says, “The road closure will start from the Brainard Lake Entrance Gate and will apply to the entire road leading up to the upper trailhead parking areas. Visitors interested in recreating in the Brainard National Recreation Area (bit.ly/Brainardlake) can park at the Brainard Gateway Trailhead (bit.ly/Brainardtrailhead) and use the Waldrop or Little Raven trails, which run parallel to the road, to access Brainard Lake and the surrounding trailheads.”
On October 17 winter day-use fees go into effect. Those visiting beautiful Brainard Lake will need to pay the $10 fee to park the Gateway Trailhead or show the America the Beautiful pass.
