In just a few weeks, Central City will showcase its tradition of celebrating the town’s most successful brothel owner from the Gold Rush days, Madam Lou Bunch.
In the midst of the 19th century, Madam Lou Bunch opened a brothel for the many miners looking to find gold in “The Richest Square Mile on Earth.” With tuberculosis wreaking havoc, the madam helped the sick and is credited with “saving the city.”
A western filmed in Central City with a scene featuring bed racing was the inspiration for the event’s famous Bed Race. The event returns on June 17, 2023, with festivities beginning at noon on the historic Main Street between the Parkway and Eureka Street.
Until 8 p.m., spectators can enjoy live entertainment throughout the afternoon and a historical costume contest. A variety of food and beverages will be available for purchase, and the parade on Main Street is a must-see.
The Beds On Wheels race begins at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Madams and Miners’ Ball at 5:30 p.m., featuring The Wild Bunch. With the exception of entering the bed racing, the events are free and open to the public.
The brothels have gone away and casinos have taken over, but during Madam Lou Bunch Day, everyone can enjoy commemorating one of history’s most powerful local businesswomen!
Madam Lou Bunch Day takes place between Parkway and Eureka.
