Music of the Mountains: Eric Stone

Posted

Eric Richard Stone says he comes from a classically trained musical family. Many members of his extended family were original faculty members of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and even started the Bay Chamber Concert Series. Stone himself went to the Quaker school known as Germantown Friends School, where he sang in the choir and took music theory classes.

Stone didn’t play any instruments. He dabbled in the cello for a couple of years, but aside from that, he was mainly a singer. However, during his high school years, he decided he wanted to try writing songs. He was drawn to folk singers – the likes of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Jim Croce, Dan Fogelberg, and Tom Rush – and would sometimes go to folk music clubs in and around the Philadelphia area, in Vermont, and on the coast of Maine.

He decided to buy a more affordable and more portable instrument than the piano – the guitar. He bought his first guitar in high school and wrote his first song in 1975. He played his first paid gig in a Philadelphia bar in 1976 and took a bar job in Vermont that same summer, where he also performed throughout the summer. From there, his prolific music career started, and since 2013, he has released eight albums and an EP.

To him, the two things that have stuck out most about playing live are being an entertainer, bringing joy to those who appreciate folk music, and being a storyteller, either through the songs directly or through an emotion they bring. He hopes that audience members will get to experience the energy that he and others performing with him feel and enjoy the “stagecraft” of singing the songs and interacting with others before, during, and after the songs themselves. He hopes his live performances will leave an inspiring impact on those who come to his shows.

If you want to see Eric Stone perform live with fellow musician Tom Hall, you can catch them at Very Nice Brewing Company, 20 Lakeview Drive #112 in Nederland, on Saturday, January 14, 2022, at 5 p.m. Visit his website at www.ericrichardstone.com for more information about Stone, and be sure to check out his releases on his website and wherever you stream your music.
