On a cold, winter Sunday, November 19, 2023, Very Nice Brewing Company (VNBC) hosted the 7th Annual Chili Cook-Off. From 2 to 5 p.m., eight red and four green chili’s were served for $3 a bowl, with all proceeds benefiting the Nederland Fire Department (NFD) and Nederland Fire Protection District.
Fire Marshal Andrew Joslin and Conor Moran, Scott Papich, Prasun Rovtar, and Bobby Swanson of the NFD judged the entries by aroma, color, consistency, taste, and after-taste. Cornbread, shredded cheese, sour cream, homemade tortillas, and Tums were also provided.
Heather Williams won first place for her red chili, which featured chuck roast, guajillo and pasilla peppers, and chile caribe. Williams also won first place for her very spicy green chili, which featured pork shoulder, cumin, coriander, and dried red chili powder.
Marc Latiolais won second place for his beef, pork, and jalapeño red chili; and Barbara Hardt won second place for her red wine infused chicken green chili.
A special thanks to the dedicated volunteers and firefighters of the NFD for their invaluable service to the community.
