Barbara Lawlor, Nederland. It takes a team to get the ball into the goal. It takes the intuition and hard work of the backfield to protect their goal, and it takes precise passes and grabs from middle field to funnel the ball to the score chasers. In last Thursday’s first game of the season, the Nederland High School fans were not disappointed at Coach Alberto Gonzalez’s debut on the field as he and the Panthers pushed hard against the Bellevue Christian Bruins, scoring four goals to the Bruins’ one. A promising way to the begin the season.
Coach Gonzalez says the boys did a great job in every position.
At the end of the day, veteran NHS athlete Adler Mueller scored one point; Sushan Dahal scored two points and Barrett Johnson scored one point.
It was the first game of the season and I am really happy about how the players appeared in the game, with attitude, intensity and the most important thing: using during the game all the strategies we practiced during the preseason. At the beginning of the game as we prepared the strategy for the game, I explained to the players that it would be really important to have control of the middle of the field and they understood it perfectly.
“During the first part of the game we had control, but the opponent had some opportunities. During the break we talked about putting more pressure and control in the game but more importantly, to run more than the other team. With this strategy in the second period we had control of the game and the other team had less chances to score. Our team knew exactly what to do at each stage of the game, especially during the second period. Our players had a great physical condition.”
Coach Gonzalez says that the Nederland players have a great attitude that he hopes will continue the rest of the season.
“One important thing that we need to improve is to be patient when we have the ball and try to open the field. We need to go game by game. For the next game the important thing will be to enjoy and try to have the control of the ball.”
