Peak Perspectives: What is the news

Posted

Last week, after being so worried about layout, I had a lot of compliments on the paper. It was a big edition, with 40 pages of news. We covered so much! My heart is full when people stop me to say ‘Thank you.”

When I started at the paper in 2006, I had no newspaper experience. I wrote stories for the school newspaper, way back when. Otherwise, I had not done anything newspaper related. I started in classifieds.

I have now done every single position at the paper. My favorite remains layout, but I also love interacting with people and talking about the paper and life in general. I guess you would call that socialization, but it is much more than that. It’s connecting to the roots of each community we cover. Finding the stories that would otherwise go untold.

When I bought the paper in 2007, my goal was to maintain it and keep it alive. That is still my goal.

There have been phenomenal years, and there have been rough years. The last few have been rough. As people change their habits of how they consume news, we are constantly changing our habits of how we produce and share the news. We will continue to do that.

The Mountain-Ear wants to get YOUR information out to the entire community! To share information about upcoming events, please submit your event to info@themountainear.com. You can submit a flier, which we can share in print and online. We have the lowest ad rates in the entire region and offer discounts for nonprofits and schools too!

To have an event covered, send in a request so we can assign a reporter. IF you have a parent, teacher or community member who can cover events, even better! We LOVE community journalism coverage from members of the school, local organizations, and even from Town or County government. It helps us stay connected to every aspect of the Peak to Peak region. And, we pay for this coverage. We currently have several paid positions open at The Mountain-Ear (see our classified ad on page 30).

We’d love to attend a meeting of your school or organization. Please send us info on the time and place of the next few meetings.

Online subscriptions are currently just $50 per year. That’s less than $1 per week. Print subscriptions range from $70 to $100 per year (in-state local to out-of- state).
