This week we received news of a postal increase for mailing our papers. The increase will be an additional 8.5% in July of 2022. We are already paying 10% more than we were a year ago.
On top of that news, we received news that our print costs are going up. Since July of 2021, our print costs have gone up about 9%. In June of 2022, our print costs will go up an additional 10%. Add in the rising cost of gas for pickup and delivery of the paper, we are looking at an overall increase of just over 22%, this year.
What does that mean for us? As a small newspaper, it means we have to find ways to offset this cost. It means newspaper prices will have to go up. Advertising prices will have to go up. It also means we have an option of expanding our digital options, to keep the cost of print and mailing down.
This week, it’s just a thought process I am working through. Next week, you’ll see some ideas of how to tackle this new increase.I value your thoughts and ideas. send them in!
