Barbara Lawlor, Nederland. He’s got their attention! Nederland Police Department officer David Stage talks to Little Bear students about what to do if they need to call 911. He read them from Anara Guard’s book, “What if You Need to Call 911”.
1. Stay calm. Speak slowly, so the dispatch can understand you.
2. Listen up. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions, so rescue workers can find you.
3. Look around. When outdoors, look around for street signs. The street names will help rescuers find you.
4. Be clear. When answering a dispatcher, use specific details.
5. Be safe. If you see a crime or are in an emergency, go where you will be safe and then call 911.
6. Don’t hang up. Stay on the phone until the dispatcher tells you to hang up.
7. Practice calling 911 with an adult. If you call 911 by accident, tell the dispatcher it was a mistake.
