On Saturday, March 25, 2023, events at Nederdays will include a sled race and a wood splitting competition.
Brian Biggs with the Nederland Parks Department said the sled race will go down 1st Street and will start at the corner of Cross Cut Pizza and Nature’s Own. They will have some turns and finish by Decent Bagel. They will bring in snow and fill 1st Street with snow that they will work into a sled course.
The event will start Saturday at 9 a.m. and go to noon. After the race, the course will be open to the public. Once opened to the public, kids 11 and over can ride a sled alone, while those 10 and under have to ride with an adult.
The sleds for the event have been donated by Ace Hardware, so all the contestants will be using the same standard plastic sled. The age limit for contestants is 16 and over. Right now they have ten teams racing.
A team can consist of an individual or two people. They have two prizes, one for best time and another for best costume. Riders are encouraged to show up in costume.
To sign up, call the Nederland Town Hall at 303-258-3266, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Information will be posted on the Nederdays website.
The wood splitting contest will directly follow the sled race. David Mans is helping to organize the event and said they will run the event behind The Deli, and people can watch from above.
The cost is $5 per person to be a competitor. It will be a multi round event and participants must be 16 years old and over. They will have three elimination rounds. Everybody will split a piece of wood and the top will move on until the final round of two. It will be a timed elimination and the fastest splitter wins.
The winner will get half of the split wood and a Nederdays hoodie. It is open to men and women. The organizers will provide two six-pound mauls, so people are not bringing their own.
The wood is being donated by TNT Wood Products in Ward. Half of the split wood will go to a family in need.
