My Fellow Americans,
One man, who hijacked his party and has held most of its legislators in line by sheer intimidation, has plunged our country into the sort of crisis few of us could imagine.
Donald Trump refuses to acknowledge the legitimacy of the election or cooperate with the president-elect for an orderly transition. He continues with preposterous claims of a stolen election which are intended to stir his base. Ominously, he recently replaced top civilian officials in national security posts with loyalists.
A deeply insecure man, Trump seems incapable of conceiving of a common good or a public interest apart from his own fortunes. Right now, the nation needs to be focused on combating this raging virus, but finds itself threatened by the very thing the Founders feared: a would-be usurper.
The longer that most Republican lawmakers and all Republicans who know better remain silent, or waffle or “humor” Donald Trump, the more riled up will be those who do not know better. With each passing day of Republican leaders’ complicity in Trump’s reckless game, he may be all the more emboldened.
Clearly, American voters did not reject Republicanism; they only rejected the small-mindedness and divisiveness of Donald Trump.
Colorado Senator Cory Gardner and most of his Republican colleagues who have thus far enabled Trump to believe he is invincible need to speak truth to him and his followers, and they need to do it today.
If Senate and House Republicans as a group do not act responsibly and promptly for the sake of the nation, Georgia voters might provide the corrective vote on January 5 and give control of the Senate to the Democrats. But make no mistake: Trump’s challenge to American democracy needs to be confronted and defeated now, not two months from now.
Please call Cory Gardner’s office today, at (202) 224-5941. The time has come for him to speak the truth to Donald Trump. Keep calling him until he does the right thing.
Let’s make this our finest hour.
Courage,
Todd Buchanan
