We lost many of our best and brightest residents in the past year: artists, musicians, officers, friends, and family. In looking back on their lives, we realize how much these people gave to our communities, how much they will be missed and how important it is to keep them in our hearts, to keep their light burning on into the future.

swift Obituary

William Swift Franke: August 13, 1948 to December 21, 2012. Franke was always an adventurer, the ultimate fly fisherman, and a Vietnam War vet.

beavens deb

Deborah Beavans, July 22, 1952 to January 19, 2013. Beavans moved to Nederland in 2001 and became an active member of Calvary Chapel. She was a runner who participated in the Bolder-Boulder for 20 years.

wright

Phillys Wright, 85, died on March 1, 2013. She was one of the original cofounders of the Mountain Forum for Peace, originator and caretaker of the Nederland Peace Garden at the entrance to town, was active in the Nederland Presbyterian Church, was co-owner and founder of the Palette Gallery, and a talented watercolor artist whose work can be seen all around town.

Margaret Logan: April 3, 1922 to March, 2013; longtime Grand Marshal in the Rollinsville Independence Day Parade and Rollinsville's oldest native. She lived in Rollinsville all her life, grew up when the Stage Stop was a livery barn, and graduated from Nederland High School.

jim v

Jim Velnosky: November 7, 1950 to April 3, 2013. Velnosky was an artist known for his oil paintings of landscapes—alpine trees against moonlight, aspens ablaze, and reflections in ponds. He was a resident of Gilpin County for 30 years and started the band, Poisoned Squirrels.

linda dunham

Linda Dunham: December 5, 1957 to March 28, 2013; from injuries sustained in a skiing accident. Dunham was a Pinecliffe resident, loved the outdoors; skied with Ignite Adaptive Sports Medicine and volunteered at Nederland schools.

Scott Reuman: August 5, 1949 to April 30, 2013. Reuman was a Magnolia Road artist, a graphic designer whose yard was filled with dazzling unique artwork. He was an adventurer and a “river god.”

Michael Jon Taras: There was a memorial on May 11 at the Eldora Mountain Resort. Taras was a Ned resident.

Jay Lyman Rawlins: August 25, 1948 to July 13, 2013. He lived 20 years in Boulder and Nederland and was a prolific artist and painter. Rawlins was a Vietnam Navy veteran with a bachelor of science degree in cartography.

Betty Kellogg

Elizabeth Kellogg: February 19, 1918 to August 19, 2013. Kellogg was a Magnolia Road rancher, an animal lover, advocate of outdoor nature-based educational programs, and forerunner in the field.

Jerome Casey: d. November 10, 2013 at 52 years old; he died in a motorcycle accident and was a network technician for Century Link Phone. He was a well-loved man who provided kindness and generosity.

Lynn Volkens: Volkens died November, 2013. She was reporter for the Weekly Register-Call, and at one time, the Mountain-Ear. She was a member of the High Country Auxiliary.

john siefert

John Seifert: November 24, 1962 to December 10, 2013. NFPD Firefighter, NPD officer, Boulder County SO deputy; family retail business; loved dogs and outdoors adventure, and was known for his sense of humor and good nature.

Sabrina

Sabrina Preisser: October 19, 1977 to December 11, 2013. Sabrina will always be known for the warm smile and embracing hug she offered all her friends. Her smile could lighten a room.

ann

Ann Cornfield: November 2, 1945 to December 15, 2013. Cornfield was a Ned teacher for over 30 years, retired as school librarian, and lived on Magnolia. She loved to read, write, practice yoga and gardening.
