For 22 years, Tungsten Toffee has been a local treat, offering melt-in-your-mouth confections that tell a story far beyond their sweet flavor.
Run by Mary and Timothy Curcio, the business began as a homeschooling project with their children. What started as a fun way to teach science, math, and marketing has grown into a Nederland staple and one that encourages the community to “Keep It Local.”
Tungsten Toffee made its debut at the Nederland Holiday Market in 2003, a year remembered for the six-foot snowstorm that caused the roof of the community center to collapse.
The holiday market was relocated to the middle/high school, and the Curcios quickly sold out of their first batch. It was a moment that solidified their place in the community, much like toffee solidifies when cool.
The company has always aimed to create a toffee that melts in your mouth, using simple ingredients like butter, sugar, and almonds.
They stand out by using organic, local, and non-GMO ingredients whenever possible, laid out in thin, delicate layers for a fresh, handmade experience that differs from mass-produced competitors.
With a team of 15 employees, the business has grown thoughtfully over the years. Their toffee and specialty popcorn are sold exclusively at local retail locations, but their reach has extended globally through their online store.
The Curcios are proud of their commitment to the community. Over the years, they have supported local initiatives and events like the Nederland Prom, Teacher Appreciation Day, the NederNederland race, the Food Pantry, and the Senior Program.
They’ve also extended their support beyond state lines, contributing to Vision Puerto Rico, an organization building sustainable housing after hurricane devastation.
The future of their toffee remains tied to Nederland, but there are challenges on the horizon.
The Curcios hope to establish a kitchen in Nederland, where they can continue sharing their love of toffee, history, and community. But without adequate resources, they may have to consider moving, which would be a significant loss for the area.
As the holiday season approaches, local businesses like Tungsten Toffee remind us of the importance of supporting our community. When you buy locally, you’re not just purchasing a product; you’re investing in the people and stories behind it.
The next time you savor a piece of Tungsten Toffee, you’ll taste more than just sugar and almonds, you’ll taste the heart of Nederland.
