Keep It Local: The Deli at 8236

Posted

NEDERLAND - If you’ve lived in Ned long enough, you’ve probably heard of The Deli at 8236, a moniker that references the elevation of the town of Nederland.

Known for having the best sandwiches in town, good vibes, and good music, The Deli is singular in name and reputation.

Owner Ross Alper opened the Deli, formerly known as Bella’s, on January 18, 2007. His inspiration arose from a fervent desire to have a genuine East Coast-style deli in town…and he figured the best way to make that happen was to open his own!

His background in the restaurant industry, specializing in Italian food, came in handy. His first job at Stewart’s A&W in Matawan, New Jersey, began when he was only 14. His roots in an Italian/Jewish community paved the way for his perfectionist style of crafting sandwiches.

Alper’s Deli features high-end Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, sold by the pound or in sandwiches, as well as soups, salads, and desserts.

Calzones and strombolis are made to order. They start with mozzarella or ricotta cheese and a choice of two ingredients. Then, they are folded into a pocket of dough and baked to perfection.

All the locals agree that The Deli’s sandwiches are by far the best on the mountain.

My favorite is the seasonal “Gobbler,” which is only available around Thanksgiving. It features turkey, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce on a toasted hoagie roll.

The homemade cannoli are a must-try and cost only $4. Sandwiches are available hot or cold, and the menu includes a breakfast option.

Consistency is key. “We really care about every sandwich we make. That’s the key to our 18-year success,” said Alper.

Alper and his team of five employees make it a point to show the community they care by offering the “Lovin’ Cup Community Kitchen,” which feeds anyone needing a little help.

“We feel we are a family up here and try to treat each other that way,” he shared.

Making people happy through food and providing an authentic East Coast-style deli experience is what makes it all worthwhile for Alper.

He hopes to make sandwiches for years to come and says it’s been very rewarding watching some of his clientele grow from children to young adults.

The business has grown steadily with the growth of Nederland but can still be found at 34 East 1st Street, tucked between the Mountain People’s Co-op and Busey Brews.

They offer catering and a VIP program for access to exclusive events, secret menus, special offers, and loyalty rewards.

The menu and more information can be found at https://www.deliat8236.com/. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call in your order at 303-258-1113 or enjoy lunch in the dining room or on the back deck.
