A lopsided Gilpin Homecoming victory

On a streak

GILPIN COUNTY — Looking for their first win of the season, on September 19, 2026, the Gilpin Eagles faced the South Park Burros in Fairplay. After three quarters of play, they found themselves down by a score of 32-14. With merely 12 minutes left in the contest, many football teams would have thrown in the towel.

Disappointed by their results to that point but unfazed, it was gut check time. The determined Eagles came roaring back, scoring 20 points while holding their opponent to zero in the final period. A last-minute interception near the goal line sealed the victory. Final Score: Gilpin 34, South Park 32.

Hoping to make winning a habit, the Eagles returned to the friendly confines of Gilpin County Stadium on September 26 for their Homecoming game against the Justice Phoenix.

Sometimes teams coming off an emotional victory in which the players gave everything experience a letdown. Such wasn’t the case this time. The Eagles would score twice in the first quarter—once on a Ryan Marr touchdown run, and again on a pick-six touchdown by cornerback Taurean Paxton.

Justice would answer with a kickoff return for a touchdown to make the score Gilpin 12, Justice 6 at the end of the first quarter.

Gilpin’s Jack Fisher ran 20 yards for a touchdown and also caught a pass for the 2-point conversion. The Phoenix threw for a touchdown, but failed on the conversion. Score at halftime: Gilpin 20, Justice 12.

At 9:52 of the third quarter, a Justice fumble at their own 10-yard line was recovered by sophomore Korbin Eberhart. That set up a rushing touchdown by Ryan Marr.

A Justice punt return for a touchdown was the last time the Phoenix saw the end zone. From there on in, it was all Eagles: a 34-yard touchdown run by quarterback George Weidler, a Weidler-to-Marr touchdown pass, and a touchdown run by Marr. Final score: Gilpin 48, Justice 20.

Running backs Marr and Fisher both registered over 100 yards rushing on the day. Marr accumulated four touchdowns and Fisher led the defense with nine tackles. Head Coach Will Lorenz pointed out that he thought the defensive line of Jackson Oliver, Tim Stoumbaugh, Nick Schoell, and Korbin Eberhart “played phenomenal football.”

Because of a cancellation on their schedule, the Eagles will play Justice again on October 17 at home for Senior Night.
