Gratitude for life in a small town

Posted

NEDERLAND - This community is small, and it is never more active than when a tragedy happens.

It's been four weeks this Thursday since the fire tore down our beloved Caribou Village, the heart of Nederland. I've heard at least a hundred conspiracy theories about what happened. I've watched every video I could get my hands on. I've stared at countless photos. And the reality is, we don't know.

We are still waiting like everyone else to find out what caused the fire. We are still not allowed into the rubble to see if anything we had in our businesses survived. We are still on edge, fire weary, nervous each time the wind blows and we smell smoke.

Trauma does that, at least for me and my husband. But we are resilient. We WILL survive this.

In these past weeks, all of us have grieved what we lost as well as what our friends and neighbors have lost. We have gathered together to talk and brainstorm, we've celebrated small opportunities to move forward and we celebrate when each of our business neighbors moves forward.

Some have opened new business locations, some are still looking for their perfect space. Above all, we have communicated within our business group and within our communities. We've shared our needs, we've received gifts, we've given gifts, we've come together.

This community, the Nederland community, comes together. The whole Peak to Peak has been helping all of us. In tragedy, this is what we do. We support each other.

I wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone who has supported each of these businesses. And each of our families. And to share that there are still some active GoFundMe accounts out there to help people rebuild, or at least find closure.
