GILPIN COUNTY – With a 3-2 record going into Christmas break, the Gilpin Eagles girls’ basketball team waited until January 7 to take to the hardwood again. Facing the Bishop Machebeuf Buffaloes in Denver, a rested and keenly focused Eagles squad scored 24 points in the first quarter alone. The Buffaloes didn’t score any. Gilpin’s backups played major minutes the rest of the way, culminating in a 50-32 victory.

Two days later, the Eagles faced the Estes Park Bobcats at home. Annabelle Aloel set the tone with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to start the game. It would be Gilpin’s highest-scoring quarter with three 3-point shots made. Score at halftime: Gilpin 23, Estes Park 7.

Elise Vincent, Faith Ramsey, and Annabelle Aloel led the team in scoring and rebounds. Elise Vincent recorded six steals, Jennifer Rodriguez-Jimenez had four, and Annabelle Aloe three. Final score: Gilpin 37, Estes Park 17.

For their January 11 home 62-23 victory against the North Park Wildcats, the Eagles applied steady pressure throughout. Faith Ramsey had a monster game, registering 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 steals. Elise Vincent contributed 15 points and 5 rebounds. Cara Holloway scored 9 points, and Annabelle Aloel added 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals. The team’s record now stands at 6 wins with merely 2 losses.

Besides Gilpin’s big three of Ramsey, Vincent, and Aloel, there are players whose numbers may not always show up in the stat sheets, but make the Eagles’ success possible. To name a few, Cadince Willis has brought height to the middle and has a huge upside as a freshman.

Makenzie Marr is always in the proper position which leads to her teammates’ rebounds and steals. Cara Holloway attacks the paint, sets screens that set her teammates up for open shots and plays the kind of dogged defense that all Gilpin’s players are known for.

The Eagles meet the Union Colony Timberwolves in Greeley on January 17. They then take on West Grand, Heritage Christian, and St. Mary’s Academy which may represent the toughest stretch of games on their schedule this season.

Head Coach Katura Atherton relates that, “As long as we execute and play to our abilities for four quarters of basketball, we have a decent shot at winning those games.”
