Gilpin Rec Center’s Annual Easter Egg Dive

The Gilpin County Recreation Center held its 20th Annual Easter Egg Dive on March 23, a unique twist on a traditional event. Since 2003, the center had been organizing a simple Easter egg hunt for local children. However, in 2004, a new element was introduced: children were now invited to dive for eggs instead of merely searching for them.

This year, around 200 enthusiastic boys and girls participated in the egg hunt. Divided into different age groups, the children embarked on their egg-hunting adventures, starting with the youngest group of 0-2 year-olds at 10:30 a.m., followed by the 3-4 year-olds at 10:45 a.m., and so on. The excitement peaked with the egg dive at noon, open to participants of all ages. Approximately 75 children took part in this final event, as reported by the Special Events Coordinator, Krystal Meyer.

The rules of the egg dive were straightforward. There were two rounds of diving. The first round allowed each participant to collect up to four eggs. Subsequently, in the second round, it was a free-for-all. The most adept swimmers were rewarded with additional eggs and prizes.

Since the event took place in a swimming pool, the eggs retrieved during the dive were empty. However, the young participants could exchange their eggs for prizes at a designated table.

The atmosphere at the event was vibrant and filled with energy. The children were thrilled to be part of this enjoyable tradition, while vigilant lifeguards ensured their safety, allowing parents to relax and relish the sight of their kids having a great time.

Such events highlight the importance of spending quality time with family and the community, enriching not only the mind but also the soul. In years to come, these children will look back fondly on the memory of meeting the Easter bunny before embarking on their egg-diving adventure.
