Gilpin County Commissioners hear CDOT update

John Scarffe, Gilpin County. At their meeting on October 7, the Gilpin County Commissioners received an update on Colorado Department of Transportation projects that affect the County.

CDOT representatives told the Board they wanted to celebrate what they’ve done and hear from the County regarding their needs for the next four years.

Achievements have included completing the Main Street South project for $17 million, installing fiberoptics, and improving cell phone coverage. CDOT completed a survey of Highway 119 to Highway 6.

CDOT will be continuing flood repairs on Highway 72 to make the road more resilient and make the creek flow a little better. A large retaining wall will be rebuilt for $8 million.

An overlay on Highway 6 to Highway 119 costs $2.5 million, and improvements will continue on I-70. Potential projects include Main Street South Phase 2, $15 to $20 million. This would be the second chunk, but no money is available to do it right now. They also will focus on rock-fall mitigation.

David Miller with CDOT in Gilpin County said the County spent $28,422 for road services, $2,044 for bridges and tunnels and $511,000 for snow and ice. They have 19 full-time employees and 22 pieces of equipment.

The next meeting of the Gilpin County Commissioners will be on Tuesday, October 21, at 9 a.m.at the Gilpin County Courthouse.
