JOHNSTOWN – On Saturday, January 17, the Gilpin Cheer Team competed in the New Year’s Bash held at Roosevelt High School in Johnstown. It was their eighth of nine events this season.
The girls had diligently practiced a new stunt called a “hitch” especially for the event. Essentially a “prep,” where one cheerleader is supported in the air, she raises one of her legs during the maneuver. Holding up a sign added to the difficulty. The team pulled it off to perfection.
Elements of the three-minute routine should demonstrate dancing skills, precise motions, and flexibility. Exhibiting all of those requirements with flair, the girls placed first in the 2A/3A Gameday division and registered a score of 62—their best showing of the season.
Head Coach Katie Yocom noted that “At the beginning of the year, the coaches see the potential and want each athlete to see it too. I think we exceeded the potential we saw at the start of the season thanks to the girls’ hard work.”
Each of the six team members shared her thoughts after their outstanding performance at the New Year’s Bash:
Suzy Schoell: “In competition, we get more points for having fun, being precise and synchronized.”
Lilly Lintner: "You have to take risks and it takes courage to be in front of a big crowd. You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable."
Liz Madrigal-Garcia: “You have to be able to take feedback and criticism.”
Zoey Paul: “It takes dedication to be a cheerleader from the beginning of the season until the end.”
Haley Hardman: “Cheering is fun. You make friends, and everyone accepts everyone.”
Leo Simpson-Molochnick: “Competition is like a roller coaster, but I wouldn’t want to ride it with anyone else.”
The Gilpin Cheer Team's final competition of the year will be the Sweetheart Bash on Saturday, February 7, at Greeley West High School.
