cc art virginia unseldBarbara Lawlor, Gilpin County.  The Gilpin Arts in Central City Juried Exhibition opened on June 4th and will be on display through August 7, 2016. Each year, the historic building with its unique mining history attracts Central City visitors from all over the country, who welcome the chance to see the work of talented artists as well as soak up the mining boom culture.

The 2016 jurors were Phillip Mann in 3D, Jill Soukup in 2D and Marc Morris in Photography.

Morris, the president of the Gilpin County Arts Association, says of the artwork: “While you peruse the show, consider the years of dedication and development of skill that each artist accrued to get where they are today in the world of art; the excitement of learning, the frustration of momentary failure, and the eventual mastery of medium… Discover the seed of communication that is being expressed visually to you.”

This year’s awards were presented at an opening reception for the artists, which included 66 individual artists who had one or more works on display. The winners of awards were honored at the reception.

The Elaine Schoelzel Memorial Best of Show Award went to Dianne Widom for her painting, “Helen,” a powerful portrait of a woman, capturing her life in the lines and expression of her face.
