Teri Metallo, Central City. There is something about the arts and summertime in the Rockies that combine for a magic we can all savor as the season kicks off across our Centennial State.
Right here in Gilpin County is a hidden jewel of an art gallery that some may have not yet discovered. The Gilpin Arts Gallery in Central City is now filled with inspirational art from across Colorado for the 68th Annual Regional Juried Art Show. This year the show runs June 7th through August 10th .
Shaped like a wheel, the gallery beckons as you catch a glimpse of a sculpture lit by the skylight above, a black and white photo that grabs you from across the room, a creation of glass—whatever it is that catches you will be special.
At every turn is another treasure, another glimpse into the hands and the hearts of those who create and share.
On the evening of June 7th, Gilpin Arts Association Members & Staff gathered to celebrate one of the most talented shows ever to hit the Eureka Street Gallery. It was a grand celebration and Opening Night with the Artists as the crowd of people kept growing. Patrons, members, friends, and family turned out for a gorgeous June evening to enjoy the show and reception. The bar was staffed by Association Board Member Gigi Lamont. Libations were enjoyed by many for a donation, with all proceeds going to the Association.
The awards were presented to the winning juried Artists by Association President Harv Mastalir. Applause, hugs and congratulations greeted each artist after being awarded their ribbons by the Association.
Not to be missed in the Gallery are the best works from the students of the Gilpin School. All ages, grade levels, categories, and many media are represented. It is young art that has more variables than more mature artists. The creativity, innocence, and playfulness of our youth's art is inspiring. Association Board Member and Art Teacher Curt Halsted worked long hard hours volunteering his time to make sure the student displays have a place of honor & the ribbons are beside each winning student’s entry.
The excitement is building on Eureka Street as the buzz of activity brings the upper part of the Central City to life after a long winter. The gardens are blooming in the Gallery, Opera, and Teller House Gardens to the delight of all who happen upon them.
Most weekdays you can find a parking space within walking distance to Eureka Street and there is limited parking in front of the Teller House that can be accessible on weekdays.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. On Opera nights the Gallery will stay open until 8 p.m.
