Barbara Lawlor, Black Hawk. The Gilpin County Youth Wrestling boys not only braved a snow storm and a long drive to Bennett on Saturday morning, they also brought home winning results to add to their seasons victories.
Cooley Murdoch, Kaleb Oliver, and Michael Wenholz dominated every opponent they faced and Cooley was the only wrestler out of 300 competing on Saturday to get five pins.
Joey Airola earned first place by winning the fourth period of an overtime match, the 0-0 battle ending with Joey’s overwhelming determination and willpower. He escaped with seconds remaining to win 1-0 after seven periods of wrestling, it was the most competitive match of the day.
The Gilpin County Youth Wrestling girls enjoyed a very special weekend of girls only wrestling. The Northern Colorado Girls Wrestling tournament welcomed girls from all over the country for a Saturday clinic at the US Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs. The event was led by the current US Olympic Women’s wrestling team members.
On Sunday our girls participated in the War of the Roses, a girls only wrestling Tournament. Girls in wrestling are a growing trend, with more joining the sport every year.
