First Day at The Last Stand

Posted

Brandy Hale, Coal Creek.

In an atmosphere of packed Super Bowl enthusiasm, the Last Stand Tavern opened its

doors for the first time on Sunday. The new sports bar has been a much awaited, and needed,

watering hole and restaurant for the Coal Creek Canyon community since the closing of the

establishment’s former incarnation as the Westfalen Hof German Restaurant.

New owners Tom and Annette Lambeth, originally from Philadelphia, accurately identified

the need for a fun meeting place for friends and neighbors over good food and drinks in the

Canyon community. Annette, a former director of education, and Tom, a builder and

developer, combined their desire to be independent entrepreneurs by purchasing the building

and doing some significant interior work. The couple’s positivity, and the anticipation of the

community, had the Last Stand displaying 5-star reviews online before the doors even opened.

The Last Stand Tavern host 16 taps of beer, 13 flat screen TVs, arcade games, and in the

summer, an exterior pool table will be placed on the deck. Nice panoramic views of the

mountains can be seen from nearly every seat in the house, especially the large outdoor patio.

Upon entering, one is faced with the large granite-topped bar that dominates the central room.

Behind the taps is Tom’s impressive beer can collection, a passion he has pursued since the 5th

grade. “There are about 1000-1500 on the wall, but I have over 3500,” he says.

Khalisa Moynihan, a Coal Creek Canyon resident enjoyed beverages and the game, and saw

neighbors with whom she had been friends on Facebook, but who she hadn’t met in person

before. “It’s nice to have a place locally to get together that isn’t 30 minutes away. I can get a

burger in 2 minutes now.”

The new menu serves traditional American pub style food, including Philly cheesesteaks,

spaghetti, and burgers. When asked what his favorite dish was, Kitchen Manager Bryce Vogel

pointed to the “Pittsburgh Steelers” Primanti Style Sandwich, a layering of pastrami, coleslaw,

cheese and tomatoes, and said, “It’s one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had”.

The Lambeth’s were very busy on opening night, but it was clear that the opening was a

success from the friendly vibe and good cheer throughout. Tom said, “It’s been a great

welcoming into the Canyon that was tremendously, immensely appreciated.”
