Freshman Shayna Siegal Gane calmly and with precision sets up the ball for senior Maxine Lammers Van Toorenburg.
Eagle sophomore Annalise Hernandez returns the ball into Panther territory.
The Eagles get their energy going in game one.
The Nederland Panthers and Gilpin Eagles greet each other before the game.
This is often the way the Panthers have set up the court for the last few years—a setter, now freshman Shayna Siegal Gane, gets ready to spike the ball over the net.
NEDERLAND — An exciting and competitive evening of volleyball took place on September 14 at Nederland Middle-Senior High School when the home team, the Nederland Panthers, took on the Gilpin Eagles in a non-league contest.
The Nederland Panthers have had a great start to their season, winning five of their first six games. Head coach Nicole Zotti said, "These girls came out and crushed the beginning of the season. Best start of a season we've ever had.
"We have some great new talent coming in our freshman group this year, and of course a ton of talent that is already existing."
Before the game started, Nederland senior volleyball player Hazel Kelley gave a beautiful vocal performance of the national anthem.
The games were close, with the lead changing multiple times each game. Strong, consistent serving, keeping the ball in bounds, and communication on the court was key for each team.
In game one Gilpin won 25-22. In game two, Gilpin came back from behind to win 25-22. Nederland took over in game 3 and won 25-17. In game four Nederland tried to catch up to Gilpin's lead but it was not enough, Gilpin won 25-16.
The Eagles now have a season record of 1-6 and the Panthers have a season record of 5-5.
Coach Zotti explained, "We have a small, but mighty team. We are fielding a JV and varsity team with only 13 players this year. This can be tough, but at least everyone is getting a lot of playing time. We always enjoy the spirit of competition and good sportsmanship!"
Head coach for the Eagles, Skyley Ramsey, did not return The Mountain-Ear's request for comment.
The Gilpin girls' volleyball team's next home games are Homecoming week, September 24, with the JV game starting at 4:30 p.m.
The Nederland Panthers' next home game is on September 23 at 5 p.m.
