Eagles conquer Huskies

Sarah Trujillo,  Gilpin County. The varsity girls and boys got a win for Gilpin County at home against the Platte Canyon Huskies on December 8, 2018. For both teams, this was their first win of the season after both suffered tough loses against the West Grand Mustangs the Thursday before. The varsity girls beat the Huskies 39-22 and the varsity boys swept the Huskies with a final score of 84-45.

The girls’ team were night and day with the way they played against the Huskies and the Mustangs. After a tough loss against West Grand, the Lady Eagles came back looking like a completely different team. They played with energy throughout the whole game. This energy led the Lady Eagles to attack the basket aggressively. They then transferred that energy into playing great defense. The team played as a unit and because of it, they now have a win under their belts to give them confidence for their next game in the season.

The boys came out strong both nights and found the strength they needed to conquer the Huskies. After losing a tough match against West Grand, the boys came in and played defense that allowed them to steal the ball and break away to score by a layup. The boys were even on track to make school history by scoring 100 points in one game but fell short when the game was on a running clock in the 4th quarter.

As a whole, the Gilpin Eagles made their fans proud with two big wins on the 8th. Hopefully this win will give them the confidence they need to beat South Park and Lake County for their upcoming games on December 14 and 15, 2018. The Eagles’ games on the 14th will be at home and they would appreciate any support from their fans to carry their intensity into the next games.
