Barbara Lawlor, Gilpin County. The Gilpin High School Eagles pulled out all the stops for the annual Homecoming celebration.
The homecoming hoopla began Thursday night with a home volleyball game and the honoring of seniors during halftime. These students included Sierra De Leon, Lexi Kennedy and Jessie Morgan who were joined by their parents in the presentation of flowers from volleyball coach Alexis Donaldson.
After the game, students gathered, under a sliver of a moon, on the football field where the Timberline Fire Protection District ignited a bonfire, a 12-foot high pile of pine slash and logs, that flared and warmed the group as the night chills set in.
On Friday, October 16, a parade of floats left Central City and headed down to Black Hawk, where the parade ended. The floats were taken back to the high school to be on display during the football game.
Gilpin County has never seen such a homecoming before. Various Gilpin groups each paid for a rented light which were erected earlier in the day. Fireworks were set off at the beginning of the game and each time the Eagles made a touchdown.
The Eagle football team entered the field in a barrage of smoke bombs as cheerleaders waved their poms and TFPD engines sounded their sirens.
During the game, the Gilpin High School Booster Club served 13 different kinds of chili, all part of the chili cook-off. Proceeds from the sales go to the scholarship fund.
At halftime, the GHS Homecoming Royalty were introduced: The Count and Countess were Jamie Alexander and Courtney Holmes; Duke and Duchess were John Immordino and Alex Martin; Prince and Princess were Sam Snyder and Alexis Anderson and King and Queen were Dan Modrigal-Garcia and Sierra De Leon.
As the royalty left the field, the GHS Cheerleaders, both varsity and junior varsity, covered the field with their gymnastic dancing. The dozens of mini cheerleaders joined the older cheerleaders and won the prize for being adorable as they mimicked their mentors.
Hundreds of spectators filled both the bleachers, and the home football fans were treated to an Eagle victory over the visiting Nederland Panthers.
