Canyon Mardi Gras features New Orleans food

Posted

COAL CREEK CANYON - Canyon residents and families packed the Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association Hall on March 1 for the Annual Mardi Gras celebration. More than 50 people attended the event.

Entry was free, but guests paid for the delicious food if they wanted to partake of the bounty.

Sean Walkinshaw, Co-President of the CCCIA Board, helped organize the event. His wife, Rebecca Mathews, is from New Orleans and guided the preparation of the food.

The menu included gumbo, chicken jambalaya, and vegetarian jambalaya for $10 each. Red beans and rice was served for $5, three beignets for $7, coffee $3, and a slice of King Cake for $4. They also had a bourbon tasting.

Guests picked up their food from the Hall’s kitchen counter and then paid Julie Sorlie at the end of the counter.

In the kitchen preparing the feast were head chef Rebecca Mathews, Suzy Schemel, Cindy Beginc. Norma Cassin, and Bruce Goodwin.

Jay Schaller set up a European roulette table, while Sean Walkinshaw ruled over a craps table.

When guests entered the hall, they found Jeremy Turnmeyer manning a table with gold and silver packages. Guests could buy tokens—gold for members and silver for non-members. They could then use the tokens at the tables to play as if they were on a Mississippi riverboat casino.

Next month, the CCCIA will feature the Arts & Crafts Spring Market, on April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vendors can sign up now for that event. The Association reminds potential vendors that

·       The community center has excellent Mountain Broadband WiFi for all your credit card sales.

·       Coffee, drinks, soup, and bread along with baked goods will be provided for sale by Canyon Coffee.

·       The Hall will set up tables the night before. Artisans can set up their wares from 8 to 9:30 a.m., and are asked to allow one hour for breakdown.

·       The Holiday Market will be advertised in the Mountain Messenger and The Mountain-Ear as well as social media. Vendors are welcome to advertise their own participation as well.
