The Salon in Nederland

Posted

The Salon in Nederland consists of three amazing women offering their services and products. Hair by Tracy (Tracy Tyrer) has been located in the Peak to Peak since 1999. Hair by Holly (Holly Phillips) opened in June of 2018. Mountain Massages (Angela Delsanter) opened in October of 2021. The physical location is 75 East 2nd Street, in downtown Nederland.

The inspiration for starting the businesses came about in different ways for each of the owners. Tyrer was living down the hill and working at a salon in Thornton. She wanted to move up the hill and her family had a cabin in Eldora. When she found a local salon was for sale, she bought the business, Innovative Cuts, from Nova Carlton. She has been working in the Peak to Peak ever since.

Phillips has been in the industry since 1997. When Tyrer needed time off for a hip replacement, she recruited Phillips to work in the salon.

Delsanter has lived in Nederland for years, but started her Nederland based massage business in October 2021, when her business down below was struggling due to Covid restrictions. Delsanter offered massage in Boulder as well as being an aerial dance performer and teacher at Frequent Flyers in Boulder. Delsanter also teaches dance at the Nederland Community Center with her performance school Mountain Movers Community Dance.

Tyrer offers a full service hair salon, including cut and color, perms, products and more. She loves her work and loves seeing old and new clients. She strives to be reliable, affordable and consistent.

Phillips offers all of the regular hair salon options, as well as tinsel and extensions. She also offers manicures and pedicures. Phillips also offers inhome appointments, which she says has been growing in the last year. People like having someone come to their home for salon needs. She loves the sense of transformation customers go through when she works on them. She went to beauty school to “learn how to listen to her clients,” after an experience when she was younger and wasn’t heard by someone about her own hair.

Delsanter offers deep tissue massage with a specialty in the neck and upper back. She also offers neonatal massage, sports massage, relaxation massage and more. She got into massage 20 years ago to learn how it impacts others physically and emotionally. She loves to trade massage for other massage and would love to meet more local massage therapists to set up trades.

When asked what makes their business different from others up here, the response was simple. Different is not the right word for what this trio offers the community. They are unique because they have a central Nederland location with easy accessibility, downtown parking and regular scheduling options. They offer top quality care, for lower than many local prices. They make sure each customer has a unique experience and is happy with their services. They enjoy having long time clients as well as meeting new ones.

Covid had many impacts on the business. Salons were shut down much longer than many service industry businesses. Even when they opened they were allowed to open at half capacity. They’re still only open at half capacity. Tyrer and Phillips had been sharing a space and moved a room apart, to allow social distancing. Now Phillips and Delsanter share a large space and only work half time, so the other can still maintain a half time schedule. Tyrer recalls when she first reopened, she worked 28 days straight to get everyone in that needed haircare.

Covid caused all of them to reevaluate cleaning procedures, which were already above and beyond the required cleaning. Phillips states, “I’m super neurotic, which feeds into the cleanliness anyways.” They triple sanitize and take even more precautions. Masks are required inside the space, at all times. They’ve lost a few clients during the pandemic, but the sense of normal is slowly returning. They plan to continue their cleaning protocols at all times. And keep the HEPA filters in each individual space, as well as windows open as much as possible to keep the air circulating through the spaces.

The trio plans to participate in the Harvest Festival this year, with hair feathers, tinsel extensions, outdoor haircuts, chair massage and more.
