Studio Tour Spotlight: Spinning Silica

Posted

Welcome to Spinning Silica, an art collective in the heart of Nederland since June 2019. The studio showcases locally made and sustainably crafted products. It houses “intentionally made wares for your home and lifestyle,” offering a public pottery studio and glass-blowing classes.

Spinning Silica is owned by Max and Brianna Rashbaum. Currently, the studio boasts a variety of handcrafted items from 19 artists from around the area. Items include everything from bowls and incense burners to mugs, planters, and teapots, to name a few.

Workshops at Spinning Silica include Date Night Handbuilding Ceramics, Private Wheel Throwing Class, Take Home Clay Kits class, Kiln services, and after school workshops. Studio memberships are also available and include space rental opportunities.

“Each item in our shop is handcrafted with beautiful intention and skill. We offer ceramics, glass, woodwork, metalwork, apothecary, plants, jewelry, yarn art, and household essentials. A large percentage of our art is made with up-cycled materials and has been repurposed,” shares Brianna Rashbaum.

One of the studio’s most known items for its durability is the Farmhouse White glaze, a glossy white tone with black flecks creating a perfect balance. The durable Farmhouse White glaze stands up to cutlery marks and acidic foods.

The popular Beach Foam glaze is a glossy blue, cascading down into puddles of foamy whites, creamy blues, and teals, appealing to anyone who loves blue tones and depictions of sandy beaches. For anyone who loves a visually busier flow of formations and color, the Goo Lagoon glaze will keep you occupied as shapes and tones come to life.

Spinning Silica is committed to supporting local artisans. It offers free vending for makers every 4th Friday Art Walk during the summer. Rashbaum proudly states Spinning Silica is family-owned, and “Our gallery offers community use and classes in our borosilicate glass blowing and stoneware ceramic studios,” adding an extra special quality about the studio.

Spinning Silica is located at 20 E. Lakeview Drive, Unit 208. You can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SpinningSilica or you can give them a call at 720-240-8484.
