I woke in the night
and thought of a poem
but my mouth was dry
and we’d went to bed late
and had an early day tomorrow
and so I decided
not to write it down
figuring I’d remember it
come morning
I bet it was a good poem
about how hard life is
about the struggles of survival
in this time of work and worry
about how the small moments
of connection and joy
get us through
I bet it ended with an image
a felt sense of home
something to linger on
as the words end
the feelings stay
but I was tired
and I know you’d been sad
and that you were stirring slightly
in your sleep
and so I turned over
and pressed up against you
and felt you press back into me
