watching the Steller's jays
flit about the feeder
in the morning
in the sun
they have something to teach me
for everything knows
so much more than us
they peck and they squawk
and they bicker
and they seem just like us
greedy hungry restless
but then one flies off
and threads a gap
between two pines
a gap which seems too small
for it to fit through
yet it does
oh, to know my edges like this
to be able to take up
exactly the right amount of space
to be able to fly
without worry
oh, that we were all able
to soar through the day
without worry
