School spirit high at Gilpin Homecoming

Volleyball sinks bucket during Dayspring game

BLACK HAWK — Pep and personality ruled at Gilpin County Schools Homecoming celebration this past week, September 21-25.

As part of a lead up to the big events, students showed their spirit with a different costume contest each day of the week. Students donned their class colors, and appreciation for the USA with a Red, White, and Blue Day; dress like a BBQ Dad or Soccer Mom; and finally, dress like a construction worker.

At the end of the school week a whole-school pep assembly was the pinnacle of the celebration. It was hosted by the cheerleaders, who provided some skilled performances. Spirit building activities like a cheer competition between the football and volleyball team, games like student versus staff scooter bowling, and a round of musical chairs generated cheer, laughter, and camaraderie.

On Thursday evening, the JV and varsity volleyball teams took on Dayspring Christian Academy. The JV team played hard, with strong performances from Genevieve Wallace, Riley Edwards, Annalise Hernandez, and Ilyana Paxton. Ultimately, Dayspring Christian took both games with strategic serves and returns.

The varsity volleyball team showed a level of cooperation that gave Dayspring a run for their money. In the first game, Carter Eliassen dug deep and returned many of Dayspring's spikes. Gilpin kept up with strong serves from Amelia Bushey and Jennifer Rodriguez-Jimenez.

In the second and third varsity game, Dayspring pulled ahead by paying attention to hitting right inside the boundary line. In both games, Gilpin rallied at the end, showing their strong team spirit and unity.

In the final play of the second game, varsity player Alice Carlson attacked a rogue return that lofted into the ceiling rafters, bounced onto the raised basketball backboard, and made a basket. While the ball was still in play, Rodriguez-Jimenez rescued it with a dive and Raynes executed a valiant attempt to send it over the net.

Unfortunately, the varsity team did not win any of their games. While their triumph didn't show on the scoreboard, it was obviously present in the joy and teamwork they found in just playing the game.

"Homecoming is the one time of the year where everyone is happy and comes together to have fun," said Gilpin senior Alice Carlson.
