GILPIN COUNTY — Shelby Allen loved to play and coach volleyball. In her memory, the 6th Annual Shelby Allen Memorial Volleyball Tournament will be held on Sunday, August 23.
The tournament will be held outside at Pete Gomes Memorial Park near the Gilpin Rec Center starting at 9 a.m.
The last day a team can register to play in the tournament is Friday, August 21. Go to bit.ly/4h2LFB3 to register. The event takes a total of 12 teams. There is a fee of $50 per team.
The money from registration fees and donations is added to the Shelby Allen Memorial Scholarship fund. Donations can be made at shelbyallen.org.
Shelby was a graduate of Nederland Middle-Senior High School (NMSHS). After graduating she coached some girls’ sports at NMSHS, including volleyball. She volunteered for many events and organizations in Gilpin County.
Scholarships in Shelby’s name are given each year to female athletes graduating from NMSHS and Gilpin County High School. The mission of the scholarship is to keep alive the positive impact that Shelby had on our community.
The Shelby Allen Memorial Scholarship currently operates under the Peak to Peak Healthy Communities Project, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Previous scholarship recipients are 2022: Ivy Brundege - NMSHS, Halle Yocum - Gilpin High School; 2023: Annabel Ivey - NMSHS, Abigail Smith - Gilpin High School; 2024: Trinity LeBlanc - NMSHS, Jordanna Gagnon and Lynda Icenogle - Gilpin High School; 2025: Payton Kutscher - NMSHS, Jiselle Osteboe - Gilpin High School.
Even if you are not a volleyball player but love to support your community and a good cause, come out and watch the fun.
