GILPIN COUNTY — Just five days after the Eagles’ thrilling 3-2 match victory on the road over Denver Academy, and followed up by a closely contested home match against Clear Creek, the Eagles took on the Buena Vista Demons in Gilpin on Saturday, October 17. The Eagles were considered underdogs, which was nothing new to them this season.
Buena Vista dominated the Eagles in the first game by a score of 25-11. Not the start they were looking for, undaunted, Gilpin came roaring back. With faith in themselves, they exorcized the Demons in the second game by a score of 25-19. With the games tied at one apiece, it was even money as to who would win the match.
Head Coach Skyley Ramsey noted that “In the second game our energy and focus were high. All of the girls played extremely scrappy, getting after every ball and fighting for each point. Our serves were consistent, and the front row swung unafraid and aggressively. Our fearlessness and confidence built from hard work and dedication led to an impressive win.”
Strong serving by Buena Vista was the difference in the end, with the Demons winning the match 3-1. Gilpin had 42 digs, 19 kills, 18 assists, 9 serving aces, and 1 block on the afternoon. Six of the kills were recorded by freshman Genevieve Wallace.
Gilpin’s final home match of the year is on Tuesday, October 27, when the Eagles face Estes Park at 6 p.m. for Senior Night.
