Owners Bill Shaffer and his wife, Emily Payne, bought Carl’s Corner at 30200 Highway 72 in Coal Creek Canyon, and closed on the purchase on June 25, 2022. The couple has a seven- year-old daughter, Chloe.

They plan on doing pretty much what Carl did with gas and car repair, but upping the game. Shaffer had a restaurant business for a while but most recently has been working for UPS.

He has a cabin on Twin Spruce Road, and when Carl’s Corner went up for sale, he had his eyes on it. “I have a car problem,” Shaffer said.

In addition to the garage he just bought, he owns a 1956 Thunderbird, a 1965 Austin Healy, a 1969 Ford Fairlane, a 1963 Rambler American and a 1968 Datsun, named the Fair Lady.

They have already painted the outside of the garage and created a new logo and signs for the business. He has a little farmer’s market placed outside in the parking lot with fresh produce from Palisade.

“I’m putting that up just to bring people in,” Shaffer said. He has three employees, himself, Emily and a mechanic, Jesse, who is a master tech, and will do oil changes, tires and everything he feels comfortable doing. Some jobs require more equipment than they have.

Inside, they have a convenience store with snacks and cold soda. In back of the office area runs a display of toy cars. They plan to have a candy counter for a piece of candy for a nickel.

In the garage, they already have antique posters, signs and original artwork. Shaffer plans to have all the walls covered with artwork.

He plans in the future to have movie nights in the garage, and wants to plan other events.

Hours for the mechanic will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and the store is open on Saturdays as well. Customers can get gas 24 hours a day.
