NEDERLAND - Prospective Kindergarten parents learned all about Nederland Elementary and specifically their Kindergarten at Nederland Elementary School (NES) at Kindergarten Information Night on January 16, 2025.
Each year the school and the NES PTA provide a dinner of pizza, salad, and beverages before parents listen to a presentation on the kids’ new educational adventure and the kids have supervised play time.
NES principal Caleb Melamed talked to about 25 parents. He shared NES’s motto—Education at Elevation. This involves five major points: Adventure, High Expectations, Stewardship, Equity, and Whole Human Beings. Melamed went into some detail about each point and how the school is working toward each one.
A day of Kindergarten at NES always involves time for welcoming, writing, snacks, read-alouds, three recesses, reading, lunch, Fundations (phonics), math, centers, and specials.
The specials at NES are art, music, and physical education.
The literacy curriculum is, unsurprisingly, called Into Reading. The Kindergarteners also have time for science, social studies, and going to the school library. They will also go on some class field trips.
Every morning the entire school practices mindfulness, and there is positive behavior support school-wide. There are school assemblies, guest speakers, NED SHRED days, and sometimes dance parties.
All of Colorado now has full-day Kindergarten. Busing to Nederland schools ranges from north of Ward to south into Gilpin County. There is also a route down Coal Creek Canyon. Parents with questions about transportation can contact Monte Miles at the Nederland Bus Terminal at 720-561-6241.
The Boulder Valley School District mountain bus drivers receive extra hours of mountain bus driving training. The District is always looking for a few more women and men to join their team of awesome drivers to keep kids safe.
Melamed reminded parents that as they prepare their child for Kindergarten to continue to read to them and practice letters and numbers. Also, have their child practice writing their name. Label their kid’s clothes and work on learning to zip those winter coats and snow pants.
NES would love to see families register their child now for next year, and spread the word to other families about registering for Kindergarten. It may seem early, but the school district is already looking at numbers and budgets and how many teachers are needed, and at which schools.
If your child will be five by October 1, it is time to register for Kindergarten. Go to www.bvsd.org to enroll. If you have questions or need assistance or more information about NES, contact Sheila Kassera at the Nederland Elementary School office. Kassera can be reached at sheila.kassera@bvsd.org or 720-561-4808. You can also contact Principal Caleb Melamed at caleb.melamed@bvsd.org or 720-561-5575 if you have any questions.
