CAÑON CITY — The Nederland High School Mountain Bike team competed in their final regular season race in Cañon City at the Royal Gorge Rumble.
The venue was a new one for the Nederland riders—the course weaving through a piñon forest of both doubletrack and flowy, technical singletrack. At one point, they had views of the Royal Gorge Bridge, and even had a section where they rode on an old train trestle.
At Regionals, the Colorado Mountain Bike League celebrates a “senior send-off” parade for the Legacy riders—those who raced all four years of high school mountain biking. Our three senior riders, Maddie Perry, Amika Begin, and Finn Fitzer, were awarded commemorative belt buckles for all of their hard work.
Freshman Nora Shurr won the season’s overall Yampa JV Girls title, fighting hard through the tight corners and steady climbs for a second place finish for the weekend. With two wins and two second places in the regular season, she will wear the region's leader’s jersey for the upcoming state race.
Junior Jonny Moss had an exciting race that started out with a crash at the start line, where he went down and was run over by two other riders. He stated, “I was 20th going into the single track and wasn’t sure how I was going to do.” He managed to dig deep and work his way up through the other riders, coming in an impressive 6th place, just one step off the podium.
Cody Waldron also had a crash mid-race, getting clipped by a rock and sliding out, but she was able to hop back up and still manage to get 6th place in JV girls.
The Sophomore boys’ race was fun for the spectators to watch as always, with six yellow jerseys flying by, usually all together. Our top finishers were Tyler Begin in 7th, Legend Teller right behind him in 9th, and Nathan Sibray in 14th.
The Nederland team took home second place in the race for Division Two, as well as second overall for regionals. We have an impressive number of eleven riders headed to State Champs: Amika Begin, Maddie Perry, Jonny Moss, Codi Waldron, Nora Shurr, Tyler Begin, Legend Teller, Nathan Sibray, Caiden Stackpole, Felix Miller, and Wyatt Dodge.
State Championships will be held in Glenwood Springs on October 24 and 25.
