GLENWOOD SPRINGS - The Nederland High School mountain bike team raced hard at State in Glenwood Springs this past weekend. The eight riders that qualified described the course as being filled with challenging uphills covered in chunky volcanic rock, followed by technical winding descents–giving them little time to rest.
Freshman Jonny Moss had a rough go at his very first State race. He got a flat in the first lap and had to ride the rest of the race with a slow-leaking tire. Amika Begin fought hard and grabbed 16th place in sophomore girls. Our senior varsity riders, Laila Waldron and Grayson Shurr, both dug deep and finished strong in their last races of their high school careers. Maddie Perry, Halle Peiffer, Finn Fitzer, and Cody Waldron all put down great performances in their races. Finally, seventh grader Nora Shurr won the Yeti skills course again–making it a clean sweep for the season.
We have three seniors graduating this year, and when asked what they learned over their years of racing, Laila Waldron states, “Mountain biking has taught me that in life there are always distractions and reasons to stop trying, what matters is your ability to focus and persevere.”
Grayson Shurr adds, “Bike racing is pretty simple–you get out of it exactly what you put into it.”
And Grizzly Steuck gives us a peek into what he’s learned by saying, “What brakes?” Our seniors won’t be putting on their brakes any time soon as they ride into their bright futures. We wish them the best of luck.
A final shout-out to our sponsors who made the new team jerseys happen this year–thanks so much to Eldora Mountain Resort, Justin’s, Rudi’s, Peak to Peak Endurance, and Reboot Mindfulness.
Mountain biking is now the largest sport at Nederland Middle-Senior High, filled with both riders who thrive on competing and also those who just love to ride and have fun with their friends. We’d love to see your kids out there on the trails!
