PJ Moon is a relatively new resident of Nederland. Having moved from Durango about a year ago, he has performed a few times at Eldora, but otherwise mainly performs gigs in Denver and Boulder. This weekend, he will be performing his first gig at Busey Brews.
He occasionally performs with a three-to-five-piece band called PJ Moon and the Swappers, but at Busey, he will be performing a solo gig. He has leaned more towards solo gigs during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is typically easier to make solo gigs happen with limited capacity and mask mandates.
Moon’s solo performances consist of himself and a loop station, where he uses guitar, drums, shakers, and other random percussion instruments to create live instrumentation as if a band is backing him up.
He started playing drums and guitar in elementary school, taking formal lessons for drums before switching to the guitar. He played in his high school instrumental ensemble and a few local bands before starting to perform professionally at about the age of 20. Playing in a group called Dog’s Best Friend, they toured around North Carolina and Tennessee for a few years.
He moved to Portland, Maine, around 2013 and played in an acoustic duo called The Cosmonauts, which was the first time Moon fully supported himself with music. They toured from Portland to Denver with 33 dates in 90 days.
Around 2012, he worked as an EMT and as part of the ski patrol in North Carolina, and in the past couple of years, in order to combat the difficulties of performing during COVID, he became re-certified as an EMT and started working with the Nederland Fire Department.
He describes his primary genres as “funk, soul, rock and roll” to promote his band, but primarily uses those descriptors as an easy method of promotion. He believes his genre encapsulates an original twist of all of those genres, and he recognizes the incredibly deep impact that music has on everyone. Music is his ultimate source of happiness, and he would pursue a career in any avenue of music. Given the choice, however, he is thrilled to be able to perform it.
You can stream the two albums of PJ Moon and the Swappers, Memoirs of Living in a Car and Soul Fashioned, wherever you listen to music. You can catch PJ Moon performing live at Busey Brews, 70 East 1st Street in Nederland, on Sunday, January 2, 2022, at 2 p.m. Here are the listings of live music this week!
