Born in Austin, Texas, Dechen Hawk moved to the Boulder area at a young age. He’s been musical for most of his life, and he guarantees that there must have been music that he was inspired by even in the womb. He says that as an infant, musicians like Stevie Wonder would often be the only thing that would calm him down to sleep, and even though he started taking lessons when he was little, he would often experiment and come up with jingles on his own.
In regards to influences, Hawk lists the musicians that his parents were often interested in, including Wonder, The Beatles, Boz Scaggs, and Eurythmics. Hawk’s father was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer as Hawk went into junior high, and to express what was inside him appropriately, he asked for an electric guitar. Once his father passed, he started taking all the music classes he could and studied musicians from the 60s through the 90s, connecting more with the guitar as time went on despite his initial instrument being the piano.
In high school, Hawk composed an original guitar piece to accompany a classmate’s dance routine, which he considers the first piece that was ever commissioned from him. He learned a lot from his music teachers, and he started a band with other friends from high school, playing at various local festivals. He considers his first major venue gig as opening for Fun Lovin’ Criminals at the Fox Theater, and soon after, he started playing regularly at local venues and coffee shops.
He loves collaborating with other musicians in the writing space, and he loves being able to share his work with an audience. He feels that performing in a room of people and feeling in sync with them allows them all to go on an emotional journey together through the music he performs, and he hopes that audience members have an “emotional, moving experience of some kind” when they come to see him perform.
You can see Dechen Hawk performing live at the Jamestown Mercantile, 108 Main Street in Jamestown, on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at 7 p.m. You can also check out his new single, “FOMO,” wherever you stream music!
