Tom Hall is a Nederland local, playing gigs outside of his day job as a Boulder Valley School District bus driver. He is a part-time member of the local bluegrass band The Witness Protection Program, formed by Eric Richard Stone.

Performing music has been a part of Hall’s life for over twenty years, but he did not start performing live until about ten years ago. During that time, even though he’s dabbled in piano and guitar, he’s primarily focused on eight-string instruments such as the mandolin, octave mandolin, and mandola.

His musical background is immense, citing his fascination with Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn growing up in a classical household. He would also hear icons of pop and rock such as Gordon Lightfoot and Led Zeppelin on the radio. Sometime around his college years, he became enamored with bluegrass music, and his musical trajectory completely changed.

For years, he has been writing songs in whatever ways they come to him. Sometimes, he will come up with a tune on the spot and then work to write the lyrics. Sometimes, he writes prose first and then sets music to it. Sometimes, he just writes the music as a fiddle tune. Whatever way an idea comes to him, he’ll find a way to utilize it.

What inspires him most about music, though, is the communal experience of attending a live show. Seeing shows from Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, Supertramp, Phish, and especially The Grateful Dead (among others) shaped his musical taste and his attitudes on live shows.

Playing music with others and watching audiences absorbed in his performances keeps his passion for music high, and he hopes someday that he can truly make a living out of an art form that means so much to him.

You can catch Tom Hall playing live with fellow bluegrass musician Eric Richard Stone at Howlin Wind Brewing Company, 51 Main Street, Rollinsville on September 11, 2021, at 4 p.m. He will also be playing at Very Nice Brewing Company, 20 Lakeview Drive, Unit 112, in Nederland on October 2, 2021, at 5 p.m.

Live music is back! That’s right. And in support of all of our local musician friends and venues, here are our weekly music listings.
