The members of Magic Beans come from all across the country. Guitarist and vocalist Scott Hachey was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota; keyboardist and vocalist Casey Russell in Santa Fe, New Mexico; bassist and vocalist Chris Duffy in Brooklyn, New York; and drummer Cody Wales in Boulder, Colorado. Somehow, they all came together to form this band, describing themselves as a group that combines “funk, rock, bluegrass, and electronica into one sound and sometimes even one composition.”
The band members cite Santana, Jeff Beck, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, LCD Soundsystem, Flea, and Leftover Salmon as among their many influences. They have released four studio albums and various live albums, with their most recent project Unzipped consisting entirely of instrumental tracks.
Their third studio album, Slice of Life, was released in 2021 and created during the pandemic. After dozens of their shows were canceled after the pandemic hit, they “hopped into their studio in Denver, Colorado and started recording songs,” creating a 14-track project that could not have existed without the randomness and spontaneity of their recording dates. The record was engineered by David Glasser, whose repertoire includes some of the work of The Grateful Dead.
The band’s primary rule was to have fun making music, and Slice of Life allowed them to experiment with music in a studio setting rather than testing songs in live shows before releasing them. However, their true home is on the stage. Being able to go back to live shows and see people react to their music has been incredibly fulfilling for them, especially being able to welcome those who haven’t seen a live show since the start of COVID. The Magic Beans will continue experimenting with their music, devoting time to their live shows, and interacting with their fans for as long as they can.
You can see The Magic Beans perform at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Drive in Nederland, on Friday, December 2, 2022. Doors open and dinner starts at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.
