Nederland’s music history is surprisingly sprawling for such a small town. The locally-built Caribou Ranch, a small recording studio created by famed producer James William Guercio, saw the likes of Michael Jackson, Elton John, The Beach Boys, Dan Fogelberg, and Phil Collins record music there. Even though the studio has been out of use since it was damaged in a fire in 1985, there’s always something to be excited about when a new piece of musical history makes its way to the small town.
There’s reasons to be thrilled when a musician who has 11 studio albums under his belt drops by, especially when he has a wife who is a Grammy award winning producer and engineer and a father whose novel was adapted into a film starring John Travola and Scarlett Johannson. When Grayson Capps visits, his trip is sure to be memorable.
Since 2005, Capps has been officially releasing music, contributing to the soundtrack of the film based on his father’s novel (The Love Song of Bobby Long), releasing albums independently and through various record labels, and learning more each day about performing and writing music.
Having graduated from Tulane University with a degree in theater, he keeps that background as a part of his daily life.
He believes that everyone should have an experience in theater at some point in their lives, whether it’s through attending classes or watching shows. For him, it’s a way to understand the archetypes of individuals and the struggles they go through as people, encouraging empathy as a result. He believes that if there’s no truth in your performances, nobody is going to care about what you have to say or believe that it comes from somewhere special, and he’s taken that mentality with him wherever he performs.
He started in the industry just after graduating from college, performing with two different bands (The House Levelers and Stavin’ Chain) before releasing his solo music. He is also married to Trina Shoemaker, a producer and engineer who has been involved in albums that have received a total of seven Grammy nominations and four wins. These albums came from artists such as Sheryl Crow, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Andrew Duhan, and Tanya Tucker.
Capps has cited Tom T. Hall, Hank Williams, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan as early musical influences. He’s also cited Tom Waits, Nick Cave, AC/DC and Black Sabbath as groups he’s gained interest in during his adult life. Through all of his experience, he’s kept his musical roots in folk and his emphasis on the simplicity of the instrument and the singer.
He finds everything he’s experienced during his lifetime, from being able to release music under a label to teaching John Travolta some of that music, just as surreal as everyone who talks to him about his life.
He’s an act you won’t want to miss when he performs in the small town of Nederland for the first time, having visited Colorado every year for the past four summers but only recently hearing about this incredibly welcoming community.
Visit The Mine Shaft on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at 7pm to see Grayson Capps perform. It’s located on 35 East First Street and owned by Martina Matthews, who invited Capps to perform, and Neil Farina.
Live music is back! That’s right. And in support of all of our local musician friends and venues, here are our weekly music listings.
