Anya Hinkle grew up in southwestern Virginia and currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina. Music has inspired her from a very young age. Her mother and stepfather were cellists in the symphony orchestra. She sang in the choir and played the violin as a child, so she was always surrounded by music. Exposed to bluegrass from a young age, she became more interested in bluegrass in high school, when she started taking guitar lessons.
She cites Norman Blake and Tony Rice as major influences on her sound, having worn out their tapes in the car once she got her driver’s license. She describes bluegrass and folk as her roots, going to bluegrass jams while living in Berkeley, California, and falling in love with the sound all over again. Once she returned to Virginia, she started playing more bluegrass jams and festivals, but she didn’t start writing her own songs until she moved to Asheville.
She says that she always loved writing and that once she started writing songs, it was a natural fit, but it wasn’t until she founded the band Dehlia Low that she combined her love of music and writing and started creating her own original music. She says that as an artist, she is currently experimenting with other styles of music to try new things and that currently, she’s focusing on Americana music.
She loves being able to perform live because she loves being able to work her set around what the audience seems receptive to. The right mix of happier originals, more somber originals and even some covers being thrown in is important to her, and she acknowledges how receptive the audience is in order to make her set the best set it can be. She hopes that she can create something in her live performances that can’t be captured unless you’re actually there, and she hopes that audiences can walk away with something new to think about.
You can catch Anya Hinkle performing live at the Gold Hill Inn, 401 Main Street in Gold Hill, on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at 6 p.m.
