NEDERLAND - There are few things in nature as multifaceted as flowers. They come in many species and regionally specific classes, thriving in different environments. They holding distinct roles in their ecosystem, and take on symbolic roles, emotionally possessing us.
A flower’s shape, its color, its every function is unique and meaningful, which is why working with flowers can be considered an art form.
“While floristry has been a staple throughout human cultures over thousands of years, we seek to utilize that same tirelessness by elevating our understanding of flowers,” Nederland locals Caroline Tully and Jesse Warren explained to The Mountain-Ear.
Tully and Warren are two artists in the medium of floristry who are bringing their special brand of creativity and care to Boulder and Gilpin Counties with their new business, Uproot Florist.
“We felt we could mesh our creative abilities with a strong desire to uplift the world around us by bringing something beautiful into it,” they said.
“As gardeners, we understand the limitless potential of flowers and plants and saw a medium with which we could challenge ourselves and naturally exhibit our own talents in design and education.”
In offering daily hand-crafted floral bouquets for pickup or delivery, and floral services for any occasion, Tully and Warren, as the owners and main florists of Uproot Florist, produce colorful displays with locally-sourced flowers and biodegradable materials that burst with thoughtfulness and meaning.
“As Jesse contemplates the hidden stories of the natural world, Caroline seeks to visit the beauty within the smallest of details,” states the biography page on Uproot Florist’s website, uprootflorist.com. “Together they work to explore a growing future of possibility.”
“We have limitless potential and want to share our creative vision through as many avenues as we can imagine,” they shared with The Mountain-Ear.
“The constant acquisition of knowledge is a huge draw for us. Every day, every bouquet, there is literally a new bud of information to uncover and explore.”
Each bouquet from Uproot is created to convey a message without words, which is done through the practice of floriography, as Tully and Warren are students in the language of flowers.
“We have discovered that they can share meanings beyond words, passed down through myth and symbolism.”
“We hope to allow others a deeper insight into a bouquet than just aesthetic beauty, by educating on the significance and history of individual flowers and how they can combine to create hidden meanings.”
Uproot Florist officially opened at the beginning of February, 2025, with their website greeting visitors and patrons with a Valentines Day-themed poem:
“Roses are red
Violets are really blue
We’re officially open
And here for you!”
Daily bouquet services are now available, with orders being accepted online or by phone. Also, weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly subscriptions, featuring bouquet delivery, will be available soon.
“We have had success with weddings, events, and classes, as well as numerous pop-ups since our inception in October, 2024,” they said.
“Our educational workshops are focused on floral designs that bolster an understanding of artistry and inspire confidence and a joy of the natural world.”
Most recently, Uproot Florist hosted Build Your Own Bouquet events, where attendees got to express themselves through the designing and arrangement of their bouquets while enjoying some wine at Augustina’s Winery in the Caribou Shopping Center.
The event was such a success, all the seats for both the afternoon and evening classes were reserved.
“The sheer joy on every face that receives one of our products is a gift in and of itself,” Tully and Warren expressed.
“We have never been in an industry that has such resounding positive feedback and it’s truly intoxicating.”
