Keep it Local: Heritage West Realty LLC

The consensus is that extroverts make great real estate agents. That’s not to say that introverts can’t be successful in this industry, it’s just that real estate requires a high degree of people interaction, which can be draining to introverts.

This brings us to Heritage West Realty LLC’s owner, Roy Varela. Though Heritage got its start in 1985, Varela has been working there since 2002 and purchased the company in 2011. As a person who has always preferred to meet and talk with people in person rather than do business on the internet, Varela has found fulfillment working in real estate.

“I like people and like hearing their stories,” Varela shares. Part of what makes Varela a great fit for the real estate industry includes eight years as a land surveyor, three years as the Gilpin County road director, and 13 years with a NYC business background developing grants for special education and vocational education.

For anyone seeking a real estate company specializing in Gilpin County, including roads, subdivisions, and home regulations, Heritage aims to help its clients every step of the way. Varela also shares that his extensive buyer interviewing process, his knowledge of real estate contracts, and the selling of homes and land are what make Heritage different.

When possible, Varela’s use of Feng Shui aids with the placement of homes. Though Gilpin County is his primary focus, other area mountain homes have sold, as well as in Boulder County, Clear Creek, Denver, and Lakewood. This is the result of very happy customer referrals.

Heritage’s success is due to the teamwork of Varela, another associate broker, Caleb Skeen, and an office administrator named Amanda. Skeen was born and raised in Gilpin County and has a connection to the fire department, which allows Skeen to know about the land in Gilpin County very well.

Business at Heritage has tripled since 2018, and since the pandemic has inspired many people to find a new life in the mountains, Heritage has attracted national attention. The current challenges for Varela and his team are not a lack of clients but high-interest rates and the dwindling of homes and land.

“We are a low-pressure company with few employees that do not pressure people and have a goal to maintain a friendly and warm close relationship with our customers by staying small,” Varela states.

He thoroughly enjoys being part of his community, including the Business Improvement District, the other friendly town businesses, its people, and the city government. At Heritage, the team does their best to have all parties in a transaction be friendly and understanding of the process. And after 20 years in the industry, there has never been a complaint.
