Jesse Seavers loves to dig around in the dirt and rocks. In 2015, he sold his web and mobile app design company which allowed him to take a year off. He took that year to focus on doing what he loved and found supreme joy in working with the earth and getting back to his roots. One of his first jobs, as a teen, was operating a backhoe for his uncle, an engineer in New Mexico. Refocusing led him to part-time work with a local excavation company. He also helped start the Nederland Composting Project and has worked in and as a contractor for sustainable home construction.
High Performance Earthworks performs services that range from the cutting of new driveways and foundation digs to full site developments. They also install residential septic systems and perform septic repairs.
Seavers runs the company with a sustainability mindset and thinks collectively about the land. Hiring for the company is based on the job candidate having a love for earthwork and a record of personal and collective high performance, or a desire to learn with such a like-minded team. In fact, the business was founded on this principle, in order to attract people who enjoy dirt work and who desire to bring their best each day. Their core values of happiness, performance, engagement, growth and service have helped their team grow together, along with their business.
As High Performance Earthworks expands, the company hopes to eventually engage in more philanthropic projects such as installing wastewater systems in impoverished areas where regulation is minimal, yet impact on public health is great. This has been a long term passion for Jesse who grew up in a rural area using a composting toilet most of his youth. Overall, Seavers hopes that having an ethos-centered organization will set the atmosphere for employees to find greater fulfillment in the work they perform. High Performance Earthworks’ goal is to create a space where everyone in the organization is excited to show up to work every day and bring their unique gifts to the world.
Of course, digging in the dirt is his favorite part of the job. Working with the earth and facing and solving the technical challenges involved is a passion. Working outside and transforming the landscape brings him greatest satisfaction.
High Performance Earthworks covers a large area of the Colorado Front Range and mountain region. Many of their seven employees also enjoy outdoor recreation in between daily molding of the earth. Markets which are covered are mostly residential and some commercial.
Seavers’ inspiration for the company came when he was finding free time after the sale of his software tech company. He was able to take a year off and reflect on what he really wanted to do with his life. Whenever he had free time, he would go and work the dirt with a rock bar, shovel and wheelbarrow. He realized this is what he wanted to do professionally.
He has a strong leadership team with Angie (his wife) as the office manager. She previously worked for an engineering firm and as a legal assistant. He describes her as very smart, detail oriented, great at reading and the inspiration to keep them all in line. She shares his vision of a kinder world with her work as a yoga teacher and yoga therapist. One other leader is Ryan Hansen who manages septics. Hansen previously worked for the city of Boulder, as well as spending some time in general construction. Hansen is also a nature photographer.
High Performance Earthworks got to where they are today by standing behind their work and building a good reputation with customers. They care for their customers and also learn from their mistakes. The company plans to triple their growth over the next three to five years and hope to become a one-stop-shop for residential and commercial site development for the Colorado mountain and Front Range areas.
