Melissa Nicholson and Brenna Cutlip opened Dusty Rose Mountain Boutique in the old Tesco building in Rollinsville in June of 2021. Their goal: “to offer local handcrafted goods to our mountain community and support other local artists.” They feature local handmade, woman-owned, small batch, and custom creations.
Brenna studied Fashion Merchandising at LSU and has been making jewelry and other wearables for over 10 years. Melissa is self taught in wet felting and has been a hatter for five years. Melissa’s accounting and office management background for over 12 years, combined with Brenna’s experience in retail management makes them the perfect team, especially when you add in their love for their craft and their complementary styles.
Originally they had the idea to have a studio space for Wylde Ryder Handcrafted and The Gnome Wrangler – their own products – and it transformed into a boutique.
Now they have a variety of local artists featured, as well as products they love and can stand behind. “Everything in our shop is curated with intention, and we seek out handcrafted goods that are 95% local and woman-owned.” What they love most, though, is “meeting our community and giving other artisans a space to show off their passions.”
They see themselves as a very small and “grass-roots” business, but they are on a continued search for local artists to feature in the boutique. They hope to grow “slowly and with intention.”
