Discover Colorado: Eternal Evergreen

Omayra Acevedo, Peak to Peak. Later this week, a dear friend of mine will be leaving to head back home to Europe. He has been on a five-week holiday in Colorado. No, it was not his first time. I have to admit that I find myself unexpectedly heartbroken over the fact that he is leaving. Since we’ve met, in 2015, we have grown very close. I know of no one whom I can trust with my life the way I trust him…

While shopping in Evergreen, I couldn’t help but experience the overwhelming sadness of goodbyes. So, I returned all my groceries back to their proper isles, got in my truck and headed to find some clarity and peace. I drove roughly nine miles from my destination to Evergreen Lake. There, I took my time and walked the 1.3 miles around the lake. It didn’t cure my sorrows, but it sure did help.

The lake is located in Evergreen Lake Park; surrounded by 55 acres of lush greenery and spectacular views. It is open year-round and it is also adjacent to the Evergreen Golf Course. Depending on the time of year, you can enjoy stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, sail boating, ice skating, ice fishing, and of course, hiking around the lake.

During the warmer months, Evergreen Lake is host to a free summer concert series – I believe every other Wednesday. No boating is allowed during events, but you can still appreciate being around the lake in other ways. For example, picnicking is allowed and you can even use a gas or electric grill. That sounds like fun! Maybe the next time my friend comes to town, I’ll take him on a picnic.

After my 1.3 mile walk around the beauty of Evergreen Lake, I sat on a bench and stared at the ripples in the water. It felt like meditation. I recalled a quote I once read, “I wanted to see him again, to say goodbye the way that I wanted. Then I realized, if I got my way, I’d never say goodbye”. I never did find out which author said this, but it is exactly how I was feeling.

Luckily, the gentle breeze embracing me was comforting and it reminded me that the things that last forever are the memories we hold closest to our hearts. Though I was sad knowing that my friend was leaving, it was comforting to know that our friendship is eternal.
